Common Sense Approach from AER on Methane Emissions
On April 24, 2017, Cenzon attended CAPPA’s lunch presentation to learn more about what is being done in the industry to reduce methane emissions in Alberta. Mark Taylor, SVP at the AER presented their plan for methane reductions.
If you were unable to attend the presentation, we’ve provided a summary and a copy of the presentation below.
Key Highlights:
- Goal: 45% reduction in methane emissions from 2014 levels by 2025
- The major methane sources are venting (48%) and fugitive emissions (46%)
- The reduction goal is easy to accomplish with existing technologies but could be very costly to industry
- The regulatory focus will be on areas where significant methane reductions can be made at minimum costs to producers
- Stakeholders from industry, government and environmental group are involved in drafting the regulations
- Draft regulation will be available for review/feedback in Fall 2017
- Regulations to come into effect January 2020
- Petrinex will be prominent in new reporting requirements
- Data will deemed public
- Financial compliance incentives may be announced between 2018-2020
Using Measurement Schematics Software Can Be Your Starting Point in this Process
With the new 45% emission reduction targets, it’s important to quickly locate and evaluate potential areas of concern. Metering schematics measure important data from the wellhead to pipeline, which shows your gas, oil, and emulsions as it goes through your facilities. It can pinpoint areas of concern such as your compressors, tanks, venting, and flaring which is potentially where there are higher concentrations of emissions being released into the air.
The regulatory environment is changing and the industry will need to adapt to new methods and technologies, such as Measurement Schematics software, to simplify processes, centrally store statistics, and provide accurate data for compliance and Provincial financial incentives.
