Employee Spotlight: How Lin Guo is Inspiring Data Science Excellence

Employee Spotlight: How Lin Guo is Inspiring Data Science Excellence

We’re excited to feature Lin Guo, our talented and warm-hearted data scientist. Starting as an intern while studying at UCalgary, Lin has grown into a key player in our team. Lin has been with the company for three years, and contributes significantly to ensuring the high-quality data analysis we provide to our clients. Her dedication and expertise in her work exemplifies the excellence we strive for at Cenozon. We’re so lucky to have her on the Cenozon team! Read through the Q&A below to learn more about Lin and what she does.

Who are you?

I’m Lin Guo, a Data Scientist at Cenozon. I primarily work on:

Data Preparation: Streamlining the transformation of company and client data into the desired and standardized format.

Data Analysis: Deploying analytical tools and techniques to detect anomalies in data, capture trends and outliers, alert the team to significant changes over time, and provide root cause analysis from multiple sources.

Data Visualization: Highlight critical information in tables and graphs to support the decision-making process for stakeholders.

Algorithm Design & Model Development: Create, develop, and implement AI algorithms and models to scrape information from unstructured data sources and generate predictive insights for business operations.

How long you’ve been at Cenozon?

My journey here dates back to three years ago. Thanks to our Chief Data Scientist, I had the opportunity to participate in an R&D project as an intern while I was studying at UCalgary. Last summer, I finally earned my badge as a Cenozonian. (Yahoo!)

How does your work at Cenozon ensure quality data analysis?

We take pride in what we do and how we do it. That is to say, we aim to minimize any misleading or ambiguous information in our delivery through our carefully designed data analysis frameworks.

One example of this is that we take a personalized approach to each client’s needs in addition to following industry conventions. Each client and their requests are unique. Thanks to my fellow service team members, the front-line “soldiers” at Cenozon, clients’ needs are thoroughly discussed and understood before we kick off any analysis process. This enables us to see through our clients’ lenses and allows us to customize solutions for different business problems.

Another example is that we always inspect data quality to ensure it is workable in the first place. Some errors are easy to catch, while others require detailed evaluation from a data science perspective or even expert knowledge from other engineers on site. Behind every delivery is our all-around investigation and validation.

What’s an exciting development that has happened recently?

This year, I have had the opportunity to mentor and welcome a summer intern, Amy. She has shown great work ethic and contributed significantly to our risk assessment analysis. Working with her has also reminded me of the unique perspectives and understandings that young talent can bring to our team. Keep up the good work, Amy!

What does mentorship mean to you?

Here are some final words I would like to share with as a first-time mentor.

The problems and challenges we face are very distinct from what we’re used to; there are more risks to take when you need to think one step ahead. At times, this uncertainty can be unnerving. Yet, on the bright side, this also brings out the unprocessed and unmediated parts of one’s self. I have gained more empathy towards my supervisors and managers and understand how vital their work is, even if it’s not easily visible to us.

This mentorship opportunity arrived unexpectedly, giving me little time to prepare. However, this experience has taught me that unplanned changes can guide us to new and rewarding destinations. The insights I’ve gained from this experience are invaluable.
